Now we have the right colours throughout the infrared photo.IR filters simulate the infra red BW effect, in a range from light (as Ilford SFX) to deep (as discontinued High Speed Kodak with dark red filter. Then, I do the opposite in the blue channel by increasing the reds to 100% and dropping the blues to 0%. For this I simply apply a channel mixer adjustments layer and in the red channel I drop the reds to 0% and increase the blues to 100%. Photoshop Finally, the colours need to be fixed. Besides pushing the vibrance, I selectively pushed the blue and yellow saturation as those colours will make the sky and foliage more vibrant (after setting the correct white balance the sky will look yellow-ish while the foliage will get a blue / aqua colour tone).Ĥ.

Colour grading For infrared images there’s not much colour grading going on during the raw editing process. Since I don’t need sharpness in this area I also added noise reduction.ģ. Local Adjustments I wanted the sky to be more dramatic and have some more detail, so I dragged a graduated filter over it and then just increased the clarity some more. Finally, I also pushed the vibrance to get a nice, saturated landscape later.Ģ. Also, I added a lot of clarity which works great for infrared photos. I turned down the exposure slightly and increased the whites and reduced the blacks for a strong overall contrast. The photo will still look strange, but that’s fixed later in the process! To set the white balance correctly I simply used the WB eyedropper on the white part of a cloud. Basic Adjustments First, I activated the lens corrections, then switched the camera profile to the custom one I made specifically for my infrared camera (I used the Adobe DNG Profile editor to create the profile). For this photo the post processing was done in Adobe Photoshops Camera Raw editor.ġ. The editing of an infrared image is mostly the same as a regular photo, you just need a custom camera profile in order to set the correct white balance. That’s because the foliage can get this very vibrant colour tones through the editing process for which I mostly aim. Since then I love to shoot infrared when the conditions are right, that means I’m looking for puffy clouds with visible blue parts in the sky and a lot of trees and grass as the foreground for my photos.
